South Surrey White Rock Dentist Explains Why Pediatric Dentistry is so Important for all Children

Tuesday, April 09, 2013 | by

Effective dental care should begin in childhood. The sooner your children are exposed to good dental hygiene habits and positive professional dental appointments, the healthier their mouths will be for years to come. Our South Surrey dentist office encourages all parents to schedule regular dental cleanings for their children. Why is this so important?

Preserve Primary Teeth

Primary teeth are susceptible to dental decay just like permanent adult teeth are. When children are able to retain their healthy primary teeth throughout childhood they are better able to learn to speak clearly and develop normal eating habits. Primary teeth also serve as placeholders for adult teeth—so you want to keep them in place until the adult tooth is ready to emerge.

Early Dental Education

Help your children establish good oral hygiene habits starting in childhood. You want your children to learn how to care for their teeth by brushing and flossing while they have primary teeth. That way, when their permanent teeth emerge, your children will be able to properly care for their smiles.

Additionally, when children have positive dental appointments, they are less likely to develop dental phobias as adults. Many adult patients end up suffering from gum disease and dental decay/loss due to avoidance of dentistry. Help your children feel confident in the dentist’s chair!

Effective pediatric dental care combines daily oral hygiene with professional dental cleanings and preventative treatments. For examples some children will benefit from preventative fluoride treatments to strengthen their dental enamel and make their permanent teeth more resilient.

White Rock Dentist Reviews the Best Ways to Minimize Oral Plaque Every Day

Tuesday, April 02, 2013 | by

Maintaining a clean mouth requires a multi-faceted approach. Patients should combine effective at-home oral care with professional dental cleanings at least twice a year. Today we’re going to talk a little more about how you can best care for you mouth at home. The goal of at-home oral care is to minimize plaque build up and keep your smile as clean as possible between dental appointments. Here are some tips from our South Surrey White Rock dentist office…

1. Brush, brush, brush

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day should be the foundation of your healthy oral hygiene routine. Brush at least twice a day—in the morning and before bed—and after every meal if possible. When you brush, gently move your toothbrush over your teeth in small circular motions. Brush for at least two minutes to clear away as much plaque as possible.

2. Don’t forget to floss!

Don’t skip flossing! Floss your teeth at least once a day. Flossing clears away plaque between teeth and plaque the builds up along the gum line. If left untouched, this plaque can lead to dental cavities and gum disease. If you’re not flossing enough, you’ll probably notice that your gum tissue is red, tender, and prone to bleeding. You may also suffer from chronic bad breath.

3. Rinse and repeat

You can even add a mouthwash into your regular oral hygiene routine to rinse away more plaque and kill additional bacteria. Try rinsing your mouth after you brush, every time you brush.

Remember, plaque is always accumulating in your mouth. In order to keep your smile clean and healthy, you need to follow an effective oral hygiene routine every single day—don’t skip!
